Hi everyone... I have been reading here for a couple of weeks. I am new to decorating cakes. It's a fun interest for me. I really enjoy it. Anyway, a friend of mine saw a couple of pictures of some of the stuff I have done and asked me about making her wedding cake. I am excited about the opportunity to make something bigger. But I'm also kind of scared by it. She first asked about a 4 tier and now is asking about a 5 tier cake. I don't know how to construct it so that it all is supported.. All I've done before is a simple 2 tier with straws. Any pointers for me?
Thanks!

Welcome, and congrats on the wedding gig!
That's a large cake! Instead of straws, I would use wooden dowels, or the large plastic Wilton dowels for added support. Other than that, it isn't really any different than a two tier...just more of it!
I agree with Amanda, more tiers is just more of the same so don't let it intimidate you.
You do have to be careful with the construction. I wouldn't trust straws either, but wooden dowels work fine for me. Be sure and run at least one dowel through all the tiers and while you probably already know this...don't attempt to transport a cake that tall assembled!
It depends on how large your cakes are as to how many dowels per tier you'll need. While you don't want so many that your cake looks like swiss cheese, you sure want to make certain you've put in enough to make it stable. Also, level cakes are a must when you've got a cake that tall. A bottom tier that is just barely un-level will turn into a top tier that is leaning at half mast.
Make sure they're all level, use enough dowels, put each tier on an a cake board and don't transport assembled....that's about it as far as I can think of!
Good luck and please let us know how it's going. Everyone here is more than happy to help!
