Video with straws instead of dowels
I just saw this video and the gal used straws instead of dowels for her double layer wedding cake...not sure if i'd use straws for more than two layers, but thought, hmmm, a good way to cut down costs!!!!! Check it out! It's a bit long, because it's a video on how to make your own wedding cake.

Re: Video with straws instead of dowels
My Aunt and Uncle ordered a 60th wedding anniversary cake from the Hy-Vee store and they used straws. There were some problems with the cake moving and they had to fix it on the spot. Not sure if it was the straws or not. It was three tiers and there wasn't any wooden dowel down the middle. I wouldn't mind trying the passion fruit filling. Sounded good.

Re: Video with straws instead of dowels
Don't ya like how they said it "not so hard" to make a wedding cake, and then skipped some of the really crucial icing smoothing techniques? She was smoothing the icing a little with a scraper and then....voila! In the next shot it was perfectly smooth! If only it really worked that way.... .gif)

Re: Video with straws instead of dowels
yeah, "anyone" can do it....... um sure....
Well, some might on the first try. Personally I would stick with the dowels. I have heard too many disaster stories with straws.

Re: Video with straws instead of dowels
I've used plain ole straws for a long time for 2 tiered cakes, but when it jumps to 3 tiers I go to the plastic dowels. I've only tried wooden dowels once and HATED trying to cut them evenly and always worry about splinters. When I worked in the bakery, we'd use the big round plastic Wilton dowels and cut them using a mitre box to keep the cut even. I'm anxious to try using the bubble tea straws, I think those would work just fine for a 3 tier.

Re: Video with straws instead of dowels
the jack is all you use you adjust it to the height of your cake by the screw on top then insert into cake. All done.
