How do you transport your cakes to venues?
How do you transport your cakes to the venues, homes where ever?

Re: How do you transport your cakes to venues?
I am trying to find a system of arranging, and boxing and set up. To make it more efficient and safer for my cakes!

I've been asked to make a three tiered wedding cake. I said yes, now I'm frightened. They've requested chocolate cake (ok), with vanilla buttercream frosting (ok) and fondant covered with a few flowers here and there (ok). Do you add your dowels to the layers after the buttercream frosting, and then wrap in fondant, and then move each layer individually? I'm thinking if you put the dowels in after fondant wrapping, the fondant might crack. I'm thinking I'd get to the hall early and put the cake together. I'm just concerned about when to dowel, when to wrap and when to put together. Your help will be sincerely appreciated. One thing I know, I'd be "afraid" to move it all put together. One more thing, I guess you understand, I've not done this before. Thank you so much for your help.

For transportation, if the cake is going to be deliver and set in the cake table, I don't box the cakes... Is less work, and less chance to ruin the design.
I set the cakes in the floor of the car-van, over a non slippery surface (rubber mat), so the cakes don't move, and with very high air condition.

Re: How do you transport your cakes to venues?
I just had to transport a 4-tier cake to a venue this Saturday, and it didn't survive my ride.
I didn't have anyone with me and the event was at least 15 miles away from me. There was a constrcution going on and it happened to be when you just come over the freeway bridge. They closed all the lanes but one, I was driving very slow but had to push the pedal a little harder cause everyone was at complete stop, My cake was not on rubbermat - big mistake, and it crashed into my front seat. I had a back seat removed and lined the floor with big paper (36x80 inches).
My mistake was - I put the cake on a stand covered with a decorative foil paper, and the cake had a cardbord under the bottom one, it was a perfect situation for a cake to slip.
I had to redo the whole decorating - taking the fondant off, reicing, re-covering with fondant, assembling, and putting the fondant drapes from one tier to another, securing with toothpics (no time to dry), decorating with flowers and everything in just 2.5 hours. What a nerve wrecking experience. I will post a picture of a cake tomorrow in my album. You'll be the judge of how it turned out.

Looking at the pictures in your album (you are good), I'm sure you found a way to make it work. But those situations are sooooo nerves braking!!!
The rubber liner in the floor of the car is really helpful.

Re: How do you transport your cakes to venues?
A chef who taught a class I took suggested the following things when transporting a cake....
1) Purchase a cheap turntable (she suggested IKEA) and place the cake on non-slip shelf liner on the turntable.
2) Buy a box bigger than the cake and turntable. Cut down the sides. Put a piece of non-slip shelf liner into the bottom of the box, and place the cake and turntable inside. Tape the side of the box back up w/ packing tape.
3) Get a sitter...LOL...somebody to hang out w/ the cake and keep an eye on it.
She's calls it her ALMOST perfect transporting plan.

Thanks, but i'm no where close to the creativity you have.
I loved your cakes in you photo albums.
What equipment should I buy/use to start playing with airbrushing? What paint and do you use?
I'm clueless about the process.
