Currently I use drinking straws. I want to try bubble tea straws but haven't gotten off my duff and ordered any yet.

Does that really support the weight of a cake? I must admit, I'd love to use something easier to cut than the dowels, but drinking straws seem like they'd be too light.

I use wooden dowels. If the cake needs extra support, I use e technique I saw Duff from ace of cakes use. He uses the plastic cake plate with wooden dowels instead of the plastic ones. You can buy them at places like the home depot, at least that's where I found them. They are the kind use for kites I think. I have also heard of the straw method. Some say it is stronger that wood and doesn't diplace cake as solid dowels do ( must be physics theory). I have been too scared to try. Maybe I will try it on a trial cake.

Hope this helps!

I am too new at this to attempt that yet!
Shoot I feel victorious if I get a correct stack with cake jacks and or wooden dowels!

I'm actually considering trying the sps support system on a cake I have due in February. I've read rave reviews on it and it's fairly inexpensive. This is a 3 tier wedding cake done with a Las Vegas theme. I've always used wooden dowels with no problems, but this cake is a big, big deal for me.

The woman ordering it runs a party planning business. She does thousands a month just in cake orders alone. She had one cake for last month that was $1500. She's trying to convince her clients to switch to another baker and she wants me! This all came about because she saw the gift cake I did for my daughter last month.

At any rate, I think I'd like to go with something a little more finished and professional rather than wooden dowels and cardboard bases. There's nothing wrong with those, used them for forever, but I want these people impressed right down to the last tiny detail!

I know you have probably mentioned this but where do you purchase the sps system? What does sps stand for and look it up on line????

Single plate system. It's made by Bakery Craft I think, but the best prices I've found are here:
