I may have made this sound wrong, I meant and assumed you were going to dowel and use a center support dowel, deff do as mac said and used dowels under each tier and the center dowel. I am sorry if I mislead you.

Re: Stacking fondant cakes
You're right 2sdae. Thank you very much Mak for your detail explanation, it's really helpful - I will try the bubble tea straws, I think they're pretty strong and wide. Wish me luck.

Oh me too, I'm so sorry. I just assumed you would be using support dowels. I use bubble tea straws in each supporting tier, THEN the center dowel should be used to support the whole structure during transport. Thanks MAK for clearing that up.

Re: Stacking fondant cakes
There's a decorating DVD that's available through Into the Oven called Successful Stacking. It's very informative.

How to make the cakes stick to each other since there's no buttercream that make them stick. I am planning to use regular cardboard paper and the center dowel, but I think the plastic plate is stronger since it has legs (cannot use center dowel if I use the plastic plate). Please help.

I set each cake in the cardboard individually, and dowel each cake individually, so they are all ready to go into the stalking process; each layer is going to support the next layer up. Take the bottom cake already dowel and set a board the same size of the cake is going to support; center it, and mark it. Then remove it and using those marks, set the next layer up. Now, get the second tier, and set it on top. Marc again the position of the next layer, and set that third layer over it. So they are all stalked, and to finalize, get 3 or 4 wooden dowel roads the length similar to the size of the cake high, minus 1 inch. One goes in the center of the cake... Use a small hummer to make it go though all the layer of cardboard, and into the bottom board (that will keep it from sliding) and depending on the size of the cakes, I will set 3 more dowels, equidistant to the center one, going again through all the layers.
It sounds more complicated than it really is. Good luck!

Re: Stacking fondant cakes
I wish I would've seen that thread sooner. I've learned a few tricks here that I've could have used on my cake last week. But I'll have more chances to try those for other cakes.
We learn new things every day, and it's like this that we get more experienced!
thanks for this thread!

Re: Stacking fondant cakes
I never stack mine prior to arriving to the location so I just use the cardboard covered in foils under each cake then use the dowels for support. Be sure your dowles are just a smidge above each tier if you don't you may have a blow out on the side of your fondant on the lower layers if you put the heavy cakes on top without adequate support. I have had my dowels right even with the fondant and had a side blow out so I always make sure they are just ever so slightly a bit longer than the height of the cake after it is covered in fondant. If your dowels are all the same size, your cake will be level.
