Fake wedding cake video
Saw this on CNN. Apparently, you can "rent" fake wedding cakes if you're on a budget. Judge for yourself:

Re: Fake wedding cake video
I worked in a bakery in Dallas that did this for a bride who wanted a towering 7 tier cake just for the looks. We took one of the dummy cakes in the window and prettied it up a bit, and it only cost her a fraction of the real cakes. The cake consultants when meeting with a bride would even mention that if they wanted a taller cake but not as many servings, we could fix up a fake tier(s) that looked just like the real cake tier(s). Many brides did choose this route.
I have to say that I love the box they shipped those cakes in - wonder if they had them especially made for them or it they ordered the boxes from a vendor. They look really sturdy!

Re: Fake wedding cake video
At the Central Oregon Wedding Fair this year there was a vendor that was doing the fake cakes out of Redmond Oregon. I don't remember their name but they were giving it a shot. I guess if that is what they want it 'd be fine. I know that some of the fondant fades in a lot of light... wonder if they have any issues with that... Hmmmmm...

Re: Fake wedding cake video
See, for me it takes away from the wonder of>>>"IS THAT A CAKE?"
I cherish those moments and if I was putting out that kinda cash for cake...well durn it...I WANT A CAKE I CAN EAT!
All the best to those who try this and like it and are successful with it. It's just not my choice and if a bride wanted this then I'd have to turn her over to someone else.

Re: Fake wedding cake video
As for those wooden boxes that collapse, she had to have had them made as for the side decor and co. name, but collapsible boxes arent that uncommon. My hubby who is a musician uses very similar ones for set up and delivery of his equipment.

Re: Fake wedding cake video
I saw something similar on the Rachael Ray show last year. But I thought it's weird! Ok you save on the cake, but you can'T eat your own wedding cake! My pleasure was to eat the wedding cake I've chosen! The cake isn't just a display, it's a CAKE! I guess someone priority isn't the same as someone else's... Anyway, people choose what they like... that wouldn't be my choice... So I would never offer that to customers... sorry .... I love eating too much to just eat a sheet cake when I could've had a cute fancy wedding cake... hey but that's just me! .gif)

Re: Fake wedding cake video
I have done a couple of wedding cakes this year that have been smaller in size for large weddings and they have ordered sheet cakes from Costco to serve when the wedding cake runs out. I was actually cutting and serving one of the cakes... she had only ordered cake for 100 guests and they had close to 300 there. The cake I made was off the table in no time and they busted out the sheet cakes... people kept asking where is the real cake? I don't want Costco cake!
I would not do a dummy cake for a wedding. I can not imagine someone paying 150 to 200 dollars for something they can not even serve to their guests. That is just dumb as far as I think. And the fondant would eventually crack and pieces fall off... unless you were one of the first to rent a cake I can not imagine that it would really be in that great of condition. Sounds like she is doing a booming business but not my cup of tea for sure!

Whoa! I can't believe the bride & groom did that!!! TACKY!!! I thought the cake dummy rental was clever. They do that over in one of the countries in Asia & the cakes are like 10 ft tall!!!! It's all for show and they really aren't big sweet eaters. I remember Shirley from CC having a pic & emailing me that story. My friend has been bugging me to mail her a cake & I was thinking about doing a dummy but then I feel like I have to do a regular cake. I agree, there's no fun in it if it's not cake.

Re: Fake wedding cake video
The one thing that I don't get is that in the video, she says that you can still "serve" a piece of the fake cake for show. But normally the bride and groom are suppose to eat the first slice of cake. So how do you plan on eating the cake if it's fake?
