i'm an idiot!!
wednesday night i put a pot on the stove with sugar and water to make a little simple syrup for the 3 cakes sitting on my counter. while waiting for it to boil, i went out to my card to get the cake boards i had purchased earlier that day. i say my neighbor, lisa, in the yard and we chatted.....a while. came back into the house and saw a glow in my kitchen. the pot was on fire and the flames were burning through the microwave above the stove!!!! i yelled for my husband who was upstairs. i grabbed the fire extinguisher under the sink and gave it a couple of hits...fire out. the pot immediately began to gush smoke. my husband held a blanket over the smoke detector while i called the alarm company and had them turn off service for 3 hrs so it wouldn't go off while we cleaned.
the pot is ruined....looks like a volcanic science experiment. the microwave is ruined...flames shooting through it will do that, you know. cook top is ruined... burnt sugar is stuck on the ceramic cooktop and i can't get it off. the oven is 16 years old and i've been wanting a new one anyway.
it could have been worse. the scary part is that when i walked into the house from the fresh air outside, I DID NOT SMELL OR SEE SMOKE. since the flames were going into the microwave's fan exhausted area, the smoke was going straight out of the house. my husband never smelled anything either.
well, i spent the rest of the evening scrubbing the kitchen down and trying to air the house out. the residue from the fire extinguisher was EVERYWHERE. it is a super fine yellow powder! so, the cakes i had sitting out as well as the icing all had to be thrown away. i spent yesterday re-baking at my friends house and last night decorating. i so tired.
when my kids asked what happened, i told them that i started talking and forgot about the pot. i screwed up and learned a simple lesson. i also mentioned that this was an example of how it doesn't take too much time for a fire to get going.
i was lucky for so many reasons. i could have gutted our kitchen. i'm so glad my kids were outside play!!
thanks for listening to me tell my story. i didn't have the time/energy until now to sit down and write it. i know you guys would understand the ordeal of having to re-bake everything!
