Default How hard is it to sew something??

Thinking about Halloween costumes. My mama is making a clown costume for my 2 year old bc I just cant find any that I like online, and she used to make them all the time for my little brother for Halloween. So when I called to ask her how to do it, she got really excited and asked could she make it!! Of course I said yes, since I have no idea how to sew. and it'd be really special if she did it for him. ...Well, now my 4 year old has decided he "would really really so love to be a dragon for Halloween" (his words lol)... I cant find any dragon costumes online that dont look dumb, and of course Pottery Barn Kids sold out of the one I liked!! So i'm thinking of getting a pattern and making one. Or should I just ask my mama to make one of those too?!

I believe I would ask your mom first since she was so excited to get to do her grandbaby his costume. At least see if she would want to do it and tell her he changed his mind to now a dragon. If she decides she doesn't want to do it. You can always get a pattern you like and try yourself. I always made my boys their costumes and the first time I looked at a pattern I was like there is no way I can do this it looks more complicated then it is. A neighbor was the one who helped me to understand the patterns. Whether it is you or your mom makes the costume please be sure to post pics so we can see what a cute costume it turned out to be.

I can knit. I can cross stitch. I have learned how to frame buildings. I took calculus in college for fun, but, no matter how many times my mother has tried to teach me, I cannot sew. The directions on the patterns just make NO sense to me. LOL Everyone is different though, and you won't know if you don't try. You might want to get your mom to make the dragon costume and try something easy first....I'm not sure how hard the pattern is.

OH I should have clarified, my 2 year old is going to be a clown. It's my 4 year old that wants to be the dragon--I just felt bad asking her to do 2 costumes!!!! I just felt like that'd be the equivalent of me volunteering to do a cake for someone and them going "OH GREAT! Can you do two?!" LOL

You could take green sweat shirt and pants and sew on the things that dragons have on their backs, not sure what they are called. You might check out Martha Stewart's website for costumes. I use to make all my daughters clothes and then got into quilting. I was addicted and couldn't pass a fabric store without going in and buying up all kinds of fabric. I bought a new computerized Viking sewing machine and sewed and sewed. My daughter bought me a serger for my birthday and I used it for a bit but could never get the hang of the differential foot. I decided to give up sewing and gave away the Viking to a friend who teaches sewing at adult education. Another friend who quilts came and carried out garbage bags of fabric. I gave fabric to Mercy hospital for the axillary who makes clothes for preemies. I did keep the serger and a lady at church is going to teach me to use it. I have since bought a new basic sewing machine and have done a bit of sewing making tater bakers for friends. We have a church bazar in October so I need to get busy making up some more. I have always loved to cook and bake and now am addicted to buying cake supplies. I do have 17 yards of upholstery fabric that I want to use on a couple of chairs that I have. My Mom's neighbors that live across the street have moved to a retirement home and their kids were cleaning the house and putting out items that they didn't want. I use to work with one of the sons back in the early 70's at ABC records. So, I picked up two good rockers, and a vanity and dresser. They had a old stereo the cabinet is medium oak and it still works. I have lots of records from the late 60's to about 1978. I was going to make bowls out of them but now I have something to play them on. Those were the days.!!!!!!!!!!!

I used to make all of my kids costumes... I actually owned a fabric & craft shop so sewing was not new to me... I have been sewing since I was 9 years old.

As a future grammy... I would be honored to make halloween costumes for all my grandkids!!! As long as they ask this far in advance I wouldn't have a problem with it. I would say ask and see if she feels comfortable with it!

Wow Mona, sounds like you're a pro!!

I do like the suggestions of just asking to see if she will do it! Or maybe I'll go buy the pattern and mail it to her and see if she would want to.

I missed if your Mom is nearby but if you have time, I would ask her if you could help her make it and she can teach you as she goes. Making a costume from a pattern can be tricky & time consuming. Give me a pattern & I get confused but I love using a sewing machine.

In my pictures I added a picture of a Mcalls pattern of a dragon costume. You can make this so easy without lost of sewing by just purchasing a sweat suit the color that you want your dragon to be and then add the things on the back. Just make triangles and attach them. Make a hood for the head and you are all set. The hood could be made from a towel the color of the sweat suit.
