OK, Jazz, here is the pic I forgot to add...it's the hibiscus that Nick Lodge did in class. I know you love that flower. He did a beautiful job.

Re: Ices 08
That hibiscus is SO BEAUTIFUL! I would love to learn the art of gumpaste. I really believe you need to be an artist to really get the flowers the right colors. I can make them... it's the coloring that stumps me every time. I have to buiy Nicholas Lodge's DVD series. He is soooo good.

And yes Keegan, it is dangerous. But I was saving for a good 6 months just for this so I was fine. What hair show is this that you go to?

Tamera, you remind me of my friend Angie and you actually look much alike. Humidity is no one's friend except for somebody who loves curly hair! I'm finding I am addicted to all these cool cake decorating tools much like my hair tools! Keegan is actually my daughter's name. I go many hair shows but each salon distributors has a big show every year. The one I went to at PR was called Fashion Focus that Cosmo Pro( aka Victory). This year is Schaumburg.

Re: Ices 08
I'm sure there are many hair toys to play with! Now you have to go to a cake convention and feed your addiction. lol It really was like being a kid in a cake store. I had to do so many walk-thrus because I kept finding new things.
And Keegan is a lovely name.
Jeri, I agree about the coloring, that's what really makes these gumpaste flowers. He didn't do much with this one though. His paste was already the orange-peachy color you see and then he took some reddish colored (forgot the name of the one he used, I wrote it down in my notebook) and brushed the ends of the petals and inside them a bit.

Did you say that was easy or he made it look easy. How did he make the stamins & how did he get the ruffles in the petals? I haven't really learned how to color the flowers either but I would make them in colored gumpaste & maybe brush a little dust inside the bottom of the flower. Hey, I'm not making cakes for royalty here & I've studied my hisbiscus plants & they're pretty much one color. Maybe if I get a chance, I'll play with gumpaste tomorrow.

Re: Ices 08
He made it look easy. .gif) GP flowers have always scared me and I left feeling I could tacking this. He cut each petal with his cutter, used the veiners to create the impressions and then took a ball tool to "ruffle" the edges a bit - he called it frilling. The stamens were the yellow ones you can buy. He use a mix of semolina flour (if you can't find any, you can use corn flour) and yellow dust to roll the stamens in. A lot of steps involved but it was nice to see it all come together. I want to take one of his classes on GP flowers because I need the hands on with stuff like this.
The buds were done with a mold.

Re: Ices 08
Ironbaker, have you made GP flowers? If not, buy a package and just play with your cutters. I don't think you have to worry about the stems so much. Is gum paste edible? For some reason I don't think it is. You KNOW I buy mine in a pouch!!

I have the ready made gumpaste from ITO and I really like working with it... However... that is all I have ever used so nothing to compare it with!

Re: Ices 08
I've only used Wilton because I have the 2 stores nearby to get it. I really do gum paste so it's not worth the extra money to paint it. I was asking my friend to do a class on painting flowers etc. I think a lot of people don't know what to do so they don't try it. When I took the Wilton Gum paste/fondant course, one lady had brought her book of cakes & she did beautiful work. She said she makes her flowers all white & then colors them. I really need to play with it. If you don't hear from me for awhile, it's because I'm playing with gum paste. I really need to play with paperwork!!
