Default Recipes?

Hi everyone!

When I was a kid, my mom always made hard candies--particularly at Christmas. She would pour the molten candy onto a cookie sheet until it hardened; once it was completely set, she would take a hammer and bust up all of the candy into "slivers" and chunks for us to eat.

Unfortunately, I never got her recipe. Anyone have a tried and true one to share?

Thanks!

Jodi

I did a little checking and I found this on the LorAnn flavourings website:

http://www.lorannoils.com/gourmet_re..._hardcandy.htm

Most hard candy recipes I've seen use the LorAnn flavourings, and you can get so many different flavours! I haven't tried it myself, as it's been too humid here (if you make it on a humid or rainy day, it tends to get sticky) but I have purchased some flavours and molds in readiness to try them.

I also found that this site conveniently carries a ready-to-make mix for hard candy - how easy is that?

How hard is it to make hard candies? Do you need special equipment to do it? I have often wondered about this?

Do you have to have special molds for candies or can you use gum paste fondant molds too?

It is not hard at all to make the hard candy. I make it all the time. You use certain molds for the hard candy. I made the mistake when I first started making it years ago and put it in a mold that is only for chocolate .I ruined it lol... If you dont have any molds and want to try it go by the lorannoils site recipe and use their direction. Intotheoven sells the flavoring you can use for it. (word of caution when using Cinnamon or peppermint the steam that rises from these are very strong scent) lol I had the house filled with the scent of peppermint and everyone was complaining where it was so strong

I left out something..If you dont have any molds you can use a lightly greased cookie sheet and as it starts to set you can score it after it hardens all the way then break it up into pieces...sprinkle some powder sugar on it and store it in container.

Do you have a hard candy recipe you could pass along, maybe some good tips also?
