Question Ribbons around cakes...fondant or real?

I have seen lots of cakes with pretty ribbons around each tier, are they made from fondant? if so, do you roll them out thin? If it is real ribbon, what do you use to hold them on the cake without it bleeding through the ribbon?

ribbon can be real or fondant.. if real, you can secure it with a little dab of royal.

I have heard of some people putting a thin strip of tape on the back of the real ribbon before putting it on the cake, to keep the grease from the buttercream from soaking through. I'm not sure if it works, because I've never done it myself, but you could give it a try.

here are some cute ribbons made out of fondant. You can make your own with embossing rollers and fondant cut into strips.

Wink Re: Ribbons around cakes...fondant or real?

Just wanted to let you know I used a real ribbon for the cake I completed over the weekend and it turned out perfect, the butter-cream icing worked perfect for holding the ribbon in place. It turned out good and everyone was pleased!! Thanks for all the help!!!

Now if a bride and groom are going to cut the cake do they have to remove the ribbon first or just squish it down when they cut????
