You are welcome! I love this short of cake, where the creativity of the decorator has to work its way to make the design come alive... And you did it!

Re: Alternate uses for pans...
I love sculpture. Cake is such a nice medium to work in....I love the challenge of trying to figure out how to make things work for a design. I'm always pushing myself to see what else I can do! I also love seeing people's faces when I deliver them! Is there a better form of art?!?! You get to not only make a beautiful/impressive sculptures, but you also get to make people VERY happy! What fun!

Artful Dodger, you cake is FANTASTIC!!!!!! I haven't been too lucky with carving. I usually don't have room in my fridge or freezer. The one time I did the pillow cake, I got lost on the bottom part and it looked like a cushion.

Thank you Jazz! I understand the room issue. I have been known to totally clean off and remove shelves to put cakes in the fridge. I really want to find a fairly cheap little fridge to put in my shop just for cake stuff.
Keep trying the carving thing. I had taken a few years of wood carving classes when I was younger, and also TONS of art classes. It takes a little bit to train yourself to see things in 3-D. Its only cake! Not much harm done if it doesn't work out right.

I didn't need any supports for it. I always make two batches of cake mix & fill the pan to about 1/2" from top. Don't forget a matching hat with that!
I found a great buy on the contour pan at AC Moore's for $5 which was the fondant kit-small roller, 3 sets of cutters, & the little wheel thingie with different attachments. If you have a store near you, get there first thing this AM (6/14/08). They are expanding their cake aisles apparently & having a clearance. That was about $30 worth of stuff retail! It's ridiculous but I bought it in case my friend didn't have one. If she doesn't need it, I'll either do Ebay or give it too my SIL.

Thanks for the purse cake walk-through and explanations.
I've never heard of AC Moore store. Is it baking supplies specialty?

Re: Alternate uses for pans...
A.C. Moore is a craft store with all kinds of things. Their website really doesn't offer much in the way of cake stuff. They sell the Wilton products and offer courses for about $30 each there. After you take the first course, you get a coupon off the next. My last class was $10! That's how they get you addicted, get you in cheap & then you buy and buy and buy... They are good with coupons on their website. You can get 40% off limited to one item. Since it's 5 mins from my house & on the way home from work, I stop by several times a week for cake boards or whatever. When they have the 50% off, I usually will buy the fondant, another darn pan, disposable icing bags or a bucket of icing for crumb coating. They have other craft courses too which is nice. I can't believe Michaels discontinued them except for the Wilton. I'm not sure if I mentioned on this thread that they just expanded their aisle. I was there when they were moving stuff & was so mad the manager didn't tell me the stuff in the carriages were on clearance! My friend who teaches there told me & I got some things the next days. I know they had the ceramic turntable for $10!!

Re: Alternate uses for pans...
I wish we would have a store like that in Sacramento or around us. The one we have is pretty expensive. The 20lb fondant went uo to $90!!!!! Insane.

Re: Alternate uses for pans...
I get the 5lbs of Wilton for $12. Since I'm in this thread, I might as well post the cake I did this weekend. It's not necessarily an alternate use but I haven't seen it before. I just made the logs using the coupler without the cap. The stones are chocolate which I bought in a taffy/candy store at the shore.
