Default Cutting A Tall Cake

Ok, this may be a silly question, but what is the proper way to cut a tall cake?

My 8 year old is having a carnival themed birthday party this year, and he wants me to make him a cake that he saw off of CC. I was reading a post by a ccer who is making this cake, and when he saw the picture, he said that's the cake for him!

If I make each of those tiers as tall as they need to be, how in the world do you cut it? Also, when you stack the layers for each tier, do you put a cakeboard between every 2 layers, or do you just stack all your layers without cakeboards, and only use cakeboards between the tiers?

I have lots of questions.

I saw that cake on cc just this morning and love it!

How tall do you think each tier is? I'm guessing 4 layers each?

Just for ease in serving if not stability, I'd put the boards between each 2 layers. To serve, take off the top tier and 2nd tier together, then because you'd have the cake boards on the top 2 layers, just cut it as you would any 2 layer cake. Remove the board and start cutting the bottom 2 layers.

Have you seen the instructions by indydebi on how to cut and serve a round cake? It's much easier than the old way of cutting wedges!

Yup! I agree with cakebaker. Make it with boards in between each layer. There was a whole thread on how this cake is constructed. I read in when I could get on. I think they said that each layer was 6" high.
Now as for serving it...it's for family so I say hack it up!

I think you're on to something as well cakebaker. I was thinking about making the bottom tier 4 layers total (8") and the middle tier 3 layers (6"), and then the top tier probably another 3 layers (6").

For the bottom layer, it will be easy to seperate each 2 layers with a cakeboard, but what do I do about the other 2 tiers with only 3 layers each? My inexperience is showing!!!!

I haven't seen indydeb's instructions. I'll have to look them up. Since it is for family and a bunch of kids, I'm sure the serving sizes will be bigger than usual though!

Maybe not put as much batter in the pans and make 4 layers but smaller so you can divide it evenly...

You can make each cake in the 2 upper layers 1.5 in tall so that you would have 2 cakes on each board ( 4 layers total per tier) or alternatively bake two cakes in 3in pans for each tier and cut each in two (4 layers total)

That sounds like a good idea!
