Default Question about Fanci-foils....

...or whatever the proper name for them is, lol!

They are the floral foils you can buy (here, too) for covering cake boards. They are not FDA approved. So, if you use them, what do you put between them and your cake??? :?: AND, where do you buy it? Does Into The Oven carry whatever I would need?

Thanks!

Jodi

Wouldnt you just put the cake circle down under the cake so that it doesnt touch the foil?? I've never used the foils for anything (never made a cake large enough to need a board), but I would think that the cake circles would solve any problems!

o.k., but what about unusual shapes? Like the flower petal pan? Either I have cake touching the foil, or I have cake board sticking out.

Hhhmmm....Would contact paper work? Is that food-safe?

What I use almost all the time to cover my boards is the vinyl tablecloth material you can get at any fabric store or Wal Mart. They have some really cute designs and some nice generic lace pattern vinyls. It's incredibly cheap and I buy several yards at a time, then cut it to whatever shape or size I need. I can put the cake directly onto the vinyl and no worries about having something between the cake and the board or any other covering on the board.

I don't use foils, but I don't see why you couldn't use the sheet vinyl as a way to protect the cake from touching the foil. They have clear vinyl as well and in the case of shaped cakes, you could just cut the vinyl to the shape of the cake if you didn't want it to show at all.

I just did a cake a few weeks ago with black foil underneath. I meant to put a piece a parchment paper between the cake and foil but I completely forgot. Rookie mistake, I know.
I flipped out about it for a while, because it was a wedding cake and I didn't remember until it was almost completely finished. By then I didn't have time to start over. I made myself sick worrying about it...actually sick!
But then my husband (voice of reason) reminded me about all those little tricks of the trade that require non-FDA approved things. For example, how do you smooth your buttercream? I read a whole thread about different things we use. High density foam paint rollers, Interfacing fabric for sewing, Computer paper, etc. I'm pretty sure none of those are FDA approved, either. (BTW, I've tried all of them...I like paper towels the best.)
We should absolutely be careful and try to follow the FDA guidelines, but I'm not spending any significant amount of time flipping out about it....uh..anymore.
Amanda
ps...nothing happened. No one got sick, the cake didn't turn the color of the foil, nothing. But, lesson learned, I don't think I'll ever forget the parchment paper again!
