Default Car Cake - Sculpted

So, a friend of mine is restoring a Mazda RX-7 for his wife for her birthday. He has ordered a car cake. I found this tutorial on carving. What do you think? Is this the way to go?

That is really similar to how I did the Mystery Machine cake. That looks to me like the way to go. What size will the cake be?

Someone famous does it that way too....Ugh! I can't remember who!!! Maybe Mike of Mike's Amazing Cakes?
I think it's an excellent way to get a nice even shape!

I thought I would use a 2 layer 9x13. It is just for a few people but this car is a big deal for them so he wants the cake to be a big deal.

I think you are right Amanda, I am pretty sure Mike of Mikes Amazing cakes does do it that way. Somewhere is a tutorial on Flicker?
I think the larger the cake, the easier it would be. Are you going to cover it in fondant or buttercream?

My car cake that I made in July... I baked the cake in a large loaf pan and carved it out of that... worked perfectly.

likitiki - BC, no fondant and they want extra thick BC

Jeri - loaf pan sounds like a good idea, just wish I had a large one.

Picky Picky! I hope they're paying for it. I didn't look at your attachment but was that when they have a pattern for the side of the cake? I saw Dianna Lopez & Vanessa Greeley do that at the cake competition. I haven't done it that way but I should the next time because this way you know the length of the hood & trunk.

Good luck!

They are paying for it but I haven't decided yet how much! And, yes, it is the method where you put the profile picture on the side of the cake and carve from that.
