Giant Cupcake
I had a customer who wanted to order a giant cupcake. I've never done one before, but I guess they're all the rage now.
At any rate, I'm lazy and didn't want to carve one so I bought the wilton pan for it.
A word of advice if you've never used it. It comes as one piece but don't bake both sides at the same time! The topper is thinner so it bakes much quicker. If you bake them both at the same time, that top is going to be way overbaked. I should've realized that, but as it was, I slipped it out of the oven and managed to get the very hot, topper out of the pan, then put it back in the oven to finish baking the bottom.
It sunk just a bit of course, but I have to level anyway.
Next time, I bake each side separately!

Re: Giant Cupcake
I have one, but loaned it to my sister-in-law literally a year ago and havent seen it since. She said she keeps forgetting to give it to me. I'll get it back eventually. Never even used it!! Thanks for the tips on it, for when I do get to play with it!

Re: Giant Cupcake
This may not be news to anyone but me...but here goes anyway!
So after baking the thing, it occurs to me, what do you do with the bottom to decorate it? Cupcakes aren't iced on the bottom, but bare cake is ugly.
I looked around and found the neatest idea...a chocolate shell to sit the cake inside. All you do is melt the chocolate ( I used the cheap stuff .gif) , spread it around inside the cake pan bottom section and chill it. It pops right out and the baked cake sits inside it. It looks just like a cupcake liner!
The things you could do with this...who knew????
Sorry, I get all worked up when I find "new" things. Forget what I said about hating giant cupcakes, these are soooo cute!!!

Re: Giant Cupcake
How neat is that?! What a great idea!
I'll bet you could do that with the silicone cupcake liners for regular size cupcakes, too!

Re: Giant Cupcake
I didn't have that problem when I baked mine but I filled the top part up to about 1/2" from the top. They baked great for me. I covered the bottom of mine in fondant on one & the other was in chocolate icing for a tree trunk so it didn't have to be neat. I turned the bottom upside down for the tree. I think I used it twice. Here's what I made.

Re: Giant Cupcake
How pretty Jazz! If my customer would've given in to use fondant, I would have never found the chocolate cupcake liner idea!!
I filled mine very close to the top too, but the capacity on the topper part is just much smaller than it is for the bottom half so that for me, it bakes much faster.
I'm not a huge fan of the pan, I really don't like baking a cake that tall all in one layer. The bottom portion is probably more than 4" tall, so it's a bugger to get done in the middle without having the sides dry. Next time I'll put something in the center to help it out.

I have that pan, but I have not used it yet
I have read before, I do not remember where though, that it works better to bake the layers separately.
Maybe I will actually use it one day!

Re: Giant Cupcake
I can tell you I'm a giant cupcake convert!
My customer was thrilled! My daughter delivered the cake for me and as soon as she left the customer called me raving about how cute the cake was. She was especially happy with the chocolate liner since she didn't know she was getting that! Heck, I didn't know she was getting it until I looked at the cupcake and thought...this thing is ugly without something on the bottom!
It just can't be easier..bake the silly thing, stick the top on, pipe on a swirl top and put on some sparkly sprinkles! Took me probably all of 5 minutes to decorate it.
