Default How to put this together?!

I have a strange cake request and I can't figure out how to put it all together. It's for a group of 3 graduating student helpers (college). It's a combination "good luck" and "we'll miss you" cake. Here is what they requested:

A bottle of wine
A catfish (swimming...marine biology student)
Something Diwali (the Indian festival of lights)

Here's a google image search link for Diwali:
diwali - Google Images

Any ideas?! I just can not figure out how to arrange this!!

My first thought was to have the catfish drinking straight from the wine bottle. The Diwali is harder because you surely don't want to offend anyone.

Sorry, I have no real ideas to offer. However, I would love to see your finished product.

Good Luck!

How about making this into a cake: http://www.ecokids.ca/blog/wp-conten...iwaliLight.jpg
But inside each little dish have a small fish "swimming" in the liquid, and a wine bottle standing in the center of it??

For a total 3D cake: have a half-empty wine bottle with a fish swimming inside it, with a few "sparklers" sticking out of the top??

For a tiered cake: Bottom tier- cutouts of wine bottles & fish surrounding the side, and then for the top tier do strings of lights surrounding it. Then the topper could be the little bowl with the fish in it, the wine bottle in the middle and lights shimmering on the sides of the bowls??

That sounds like a joke!

A bottle of wine
A catfish (swimming...marine biology student)
Something Diwali (the Indian festival of lights)

I did a Diwali cake & it's basically any kind of pattern you want. I am thinking maybe you can cover the board in some sort of Diwali like pattern. Some of the patterns almost look like quilting so you can keep that in mind. Maybe a catfish on a plate with a bottle of wine & a wine glass? I'll bet Jeri can come up with something. I'll be thinking about it & let you know if I come up with something. Maybe you should think about it over a bottle of wine. 8)

Thanks for all the advice, guys!!

I asked my friend if I could plate the fish and she specifically requested that it not be dead...and she wasn't concerned if it all fit together logically. Boo!! It would look so nice to have the cake be a plate, a bottle of wine and a diwali cake!

Maybe do an underwater treasure chest type thing with the fish swimming sticking up & then maybe a diwali dishware plate laying nearby and of course, an empty wine bottle. The Diwali pattern is usually made in the courtyard out of lentil, rice, etc. flour. Maybe there are some other Diwali trinkets? I saw some things to hang on the door.

Trying to get caught up all the new posts. Hmmm, I like Jazz' idea about the treasure chest at the bottom of the sea. That's a great idea if you want to tie them all together. Other than that, the only thing I can think of is an aquarium with wine and diwali either around/on top of or could be inside the tank. I would think the chest would be much easier to make though. Can't wait to see what you come up with!

haven't read the other posts but I thought of a wine bottle with a catfish on the label and you can use the dewali theme as the "background" fillers? just a thought.

Catfish on the label...that's awesome!! That would be so much easier than what I sketched out!
Well, the approved sketch is a sunken treasure chest. It's got a hole in the side and the catfish will be "swimming" through the hole (so I only have to do a head and a tail. ) But in the top it will have a bottle of wine, a cloth with a Diwali star pattern, some Diwali candle holders and lots of other treasure chest-y things; coins, a string of pearls....stuff like that.
Thanks Jazz for the idea!! I have to go see if I can find some sea life molds, get some petal dusts, more fondant, maybe a coin mold...lots of fun shopping to do this morning!!!
