Default Preparing dummies

I just ordered some cake dummies. I can't wait to get them, I desperately need some practice! But, how do I prepare them for icing? Surely you don't just ice right on the styrofoam, do you?
Thanks!

I don't use cake dummies, but I've read where some people cover them with plastic wrap so that they can use them over again.

I use Royal Icing and fondant. I ice them in royal and then let dry. Then I smooth out the royal with a piece of fine sand paper. If I want to decorate it with more piping I pipe in royal or if fondant I just apply the fondant.
You can soak it in hot water and the royal melts away. Fondant will too.

I tried the wrapping with saran wrap and press-n-seal too and could never get a smooth covering for my dummies so my fondant or butter cream would've been ruff looking and bumpy no matter what I did. So I just stopped doing that. The royal works for me and it melts off with the hot soapy water so why bother and waste money and time and patients on it.

Thanks, I'll try all of that. I do want to practice my buttercream skills, so I guess I'll just have to play with it and see what works the best. I'm just so excited to be able to make "cakes" and get my designs out of my head without waiting for someone to order!
