Default Business Question

I have heard that if you can't get a health permit to open up a home business in California you can "rent" out a business's kitchen, oven etc.
So I guess you would bake your cakes at someone's establishment and be legal that way. So I get that part, but does anyone know how to go about asking someone if they would rent out their ovens??? Does anyone know what is excpected to pay in rent to the business owneres?? What is the norm in other words?

I don't know the norm, especially in your area. But I have heard of people renting out church kitchens. If you belong to a church you might try that route. You may even get a good rate if you are a member. I've thought of doing this myself, but I don't do enough business to rent out a kitchen. To rent a kitchen for just one or two cakes, I'd have to charge way more than my cakes are worth. I'd like to be legal, but for now I'm kind of stuck. My state doesn't support home bakery licenses. It has to be done locally, and the requirements are impossible for me to meet.

It is unfortunate that there isn't such thing as a special "Home Kitchen" license. I've worked my way through college in restaurants and I can guarantee that my kitchen is cleaner than a lot of businesses out there! If you've never worked in a restaurant, even the ones that get 90 and above, you'd be shocked. I may not have a mop sink and a separate entrance, but there are no bugs, rodents, or grease ridden walls!

Some bakeries do it too, but churches and sometimes small private schools can do it also.
Some people rent out time at local restaurants and then provide them with desserts too to help offset the rent they pay for the kitchen.

That sounds like a good idea! I recently spoke to my culinary instructor and he recommended a similar solution. He said a great place to ask would be a mom and pops type business that maybe only serve breakfast and lucnh and is closed for dinner. He said they are most likely to welcome the idea. Hope this gives some of you an idea!!!
As for me, I'm on the hunt!
