New here! And a question :)
Hi everyone! I'm so excited that I found this forum! Baking is one of my ultimate passions, and I love cake decorating! Right now it is just a hobby, as I'm a 21 year old college student. I love making and decorating cakes and cupcakes, especially (I have a cupcake collection as well- all things cupcake!)
I was wondering if I could have any recommendations for "paint" on cake- My mom is turning 50 this February, and I am surprising her with a trip to London. I would like to make her cake into the shape of the crown jewels-- most specifically, a crown. I know I will be able to shape my cake and cover it with fondant, but what can I use to "paint" the crown? Can I use water mixed with Wilton colors?
Thanks and I can't wait to explore the forum!

Re: New here! And a question :)
Welcome kittykupkake! I tried water mixed with wilton colors on fondant and it didn't work well, wouldn't dry. Try vodka or clear vanilla extract, it will dry faster. You might try the color straight but blot your brush first. I am still experimenting with this. Maybe someone else will have a better way.

Re: New here! And a question :)
Thanks for the tip! Here is the look I'm trying to recreate--

(not sure if that will work-)
I know it will be hard, but I've got until February and I'm planning to do models on the weekends. I want it to be super-special for my mom. I was going to do a replica of Big Ben, but she'd know too easily- Her party will be English themed (kind of corny- but English tea, crumpets, jam, etc.--just a fun theme) and then we're giving her the airplane tickets in a card.
Any suggestions would be helpful! I think I can buy a lot of jewels and little things to put on at a craft store and make sure they're off before anyone eats it

Re: New here! And a question :)
Welcome!
Vodka and luster dust make a beautiful shimmery paint, and it comes in tons of colors! It really only takes a tiny bit of vodka, not enough to taste. For example, if you want to make a gold crown, I would tint your fondant to a goldish color similar to the luster dust you are using. That way the "paint" is more of a shimmery accent after just a few light coats, and you don't have to paint 50 coats to get the look you are going for. I learned that one from experience! .gif) Make sure you plan plenty of time for drying!
Good luck!

Re: New here! And a question :)
Sounds so cool! I'd have to agree. I'd tint my fondant as close to gold as poss then when dry paint it with gold luster dusts with vodka...drys very quick and their is no liquor flavor or content left behind, some extracts leave behind their smell and taste.
And deff post those practice shots...we'd love to see them for sure!!!

hehe i think its so funny to hear views on how people see different countrys tho its going to be a bit flavorless with tea and crumpets to eat lol well dont 4get the scones then hehe it sounds great she should love it what sort of things u planning on doing in london have u been before if u need a advice on where to visit just ask now 2 ur question i would maybe use sweets like jelly tots or dew drops because they look more like jewls and will be risen but u could also try mixing food colouring with piping gel u might need to melt chocolate with a few drops of glycerine to create outlines so the middle wont run but they will b nice and bright. why dont you make some toy soldiers to guard it blaitent london use coloured modeling paste edible glue or royal icing will secure the pieces together good luck provide pics x
