How did you get into this?

How did you get into cake decorating, baking, candy making, or whatever your passion is?

I bought a Willton yearbook from the dollar store. It was only a $1 but I tried to talk myself out of it because I already have enough junk and I have no artistic ability at all. I mean I can't even draw a house but to my surprise I loved decorating and get many compliments on my work. I love cakes but my passion is decorating cookies! How bout you?

I saw some pics on line of awesome cakes. So I then got on line and looked in my local papers and phone books for cake decorating and found classes and supply stores. So I called up and got into a class and went to my first supply store!!!!!! WHAM!!!!!!!!
I was hooked!

I wanted to be able make my step son cool birthday cakes, so I started reading books and joining forums. I've been doing it just over a year and really do enjoy it.

I was looking for a job and applied at a local grocery store with a very good reputation. I was surprised when they called and offered me a job two months later. I applied for just about any dept in the store. They said they had an opening in the bakery. I would have to come in at 4 am and make the doughnuts, then set up the pastries for the next day then help the bakers run bread. I did this for a few months while watching all the fun the cake decorators were having. (they originally wanted me to be a cake decorator and I was scared)
I did a lot of watching then started begging my boss to transfer me to that area since they were very short handed. I finally got my wish, but was still scared. That was about 3 months ago and I am loving going to work everyday. It's a new challenge and a new learning experience every day and I think I have gotten pretty good for having never done this particular aspect of food preparation. I don't do wedding cakes yet, mostly generic birthday and holiday and store specialty cakes and decorate brownie bites, petit fours, eclairs, chocolate dipped cheesecake, and cannoli's. I've come to like decorating in mini and have been practicing on cutting some of my dessert recipes down to make mini pastries with much success.
So, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!!

cool stories... I just love hearing how we all found cake decorating...such different ways and meanings but so many similarities too!

You know the funny thing, when I was a little girl I would spend hours looking through my mothers Wilton cake decorating books and dream of making those cakes. Now at the age of 47 I am finally doing what I wanted to do when I was a little girl.

I use to sit for hours and look at my moms cookbooks, only at the cookies, cakes, pies, etc. We didn't have wilton books . Though I never saw a sheet cake until I was a teenager, we all got a home made layer cake for birthdays.
