Default What's the difference between cake drums and masonite boards?

Could somebody tell me what's the difference between cake drums and masonite boards and what purposes you would use for each?

Masonite boards are made of smooth wood. They are thin and very strong. I prefer them over anything else. I reuse them over and over and have even washed some (although I wouldn't do that all the time).
Cake drums are pre-covered stacked/glued cardboard (usually 3 pieces of cardboard glued together, I think).
Hope that helps!

So masonite boards would be better to use as the base for a tiered cake?

I think so. Not only are they super strong, but they can be used over and over and over which makes them a better value than the drums. It sucks that you have to cover them yourself, but it's a small trade off. You can also buy masonite at Lowe's and Home Depot. My DH cuts all my square/rectangle boards and buy all the round ones.
Hope that helps.

The "pro" side about drums is you don't have to worry about getting them back. Drums are about the thickness of 3 cardboard cake boards and completely foil wrapped.

That's true. I love that the drums come pre-wrapped. But the masonite boards are in the same price range as the drums so I tell people I want them back, but they're cheap enough that I don't hunt them down.
