If we see a beautiful cake on a website, and know that we can just about duplicate the idea, with a few tweeks here and there, is it permissable to do so?

Of course, your taking an existing idea and making it your own...that is art in my opinion.
You can always say, we got the base idea from xxx and we did this with it.

Ok, now that you mention that, I've purchased the Confetti Cakes Book and a cookie and cake book authored by Toba Garrett. I obviously follow the designs in that book that I like. I still was concerned about the websites though. Thanks for your response.

Unless you exact copy a design it has your signature to it by time it's done.
