Wink My DH's birthday cake!!!! You know, practice makes perfect!!!

My hubby is a wonderful guy! He has taken my Mom into our house after her stroke and helps me look after her and makes her part of the family. That among a lot of other things.

He loves his Harley & I decided to wing it since I never really got directions. I took pictures along the way.

I baked two mixes in a 12"x3" Fat Daddio pan. Cut it in 3rd & stacked it. I put it in the fridge because I would never have room in the freezer. Here are my step by step photos!!!

He has a Harley bank so I laid that down & traced it. Then I took the parchment paper & outlined the outline to make it better.

This was the pattern I made & stuck it to the sides with toothpicks & carved the cake. I used 2 cake mixes & cut the oil by about a third. Gorman Family Fotos107.jpg

This was the carved cake Jimmy's birthday cake 2008 008.JPG I was going to cover the cake in fondant & then just add fondant as wheels, the pipes, etc. I decided to cut off the front wheel & handle bars to make it more 3D.

Jimmy's birthday cake 2008 014.JPG Then I started icing. Big decision, should I use the Wilton tubbed icing or the DH. I decided to use the DH since it seem to hold the cake together well. The carving was easy. At that point, I should have put it back in the fridge to chill some more but didn't....

This is my wonderful husband's cake for tomorrow....

Jimmy's birthday cake 2008 015.JPG

hmmmm, just when I thought I was getting the hang of cake decorating, disaster strikes. My husband was at a bike club meeting and my brother was here when the cake split. We were laughing pretty hard. My Mom & I keep snickering. My husband came home & I keep telling him how much I love him. He's asking "Ok, what did you do? Mom? What did she do?" I'm too tired to bake another cake. Tomorrow I'm going to get sour cream & make a cheese cake. I had one but it went "sourer" because it expired. I'm going to serve him my disaster cake with the candle in it.

He won't be too upset. His 42" TV died months ago right when our 2 cats were in the animal hospital at the same time. He just took a spare 32" or whatever it is tv we had & didn't even mention getting his dream TV which he's been talking about for years. My brother mentioned a few weeks ago that he would like to give him some money (a lot by our birthday gift standards) towards a new tv but checked with me to see about the rest of it. He's doing it because he welcomed Mom in the house & knows we are restricted here. I told him do it and we'll swing the rest plus I asked his daughter to give him money too. I think Jimmy will have a happy birthday afterall & hopefully, he'll get a laugh out of his cake.

I didn't buy his favorite Entenmann's pound cake though. If anyone has any ideas of what I can make out of it, let me know. I was thinking of a treasure chest but I'm not in the mood. I'm not even in the mood for the cheese cake & am wondering if I should make it since we have all that other cake that I carved off plus his crashed motorcycle cake.

You know, I have never made those. How do I make them? I'm off to bed. I didn't even go food shopping for tomorrow & I have people drifting in all day because they are working.

Don't throw out those cake scraps!

These little treats, (sometimes referred to as "cake truffles" or "cake bon-bons" are so easy to make and are absolutely delicious! You can make these delightful cake balls using your leftover cake scraps, or even use an entire cake to make them! Tools Needed:
  • Decorating gloves
  • Mixing Bowl with lid
  • One cooled cake – any size and any flavor (or you can use all those left over scraps)
  • One bottle liquid coffee creamer – any flavor complimentary to cake – or anything to use as a binder, Butter cream icing, liqueur, etc.
  • Melted Chocolate – amount varies with how many balls need to be dipped
  • Parchment Paper lined tray/plate/platter

Place cooled cake or scraps into a bowl in large pieces
Using a fork, crumble the cake into a nice crumb
When it appears all the cake is crumbled use the fork, or your hands, and run thru it to make sure it’s all crumbled.
Crumbled cake will be soft and fluffy Pour in liquid coffee creamer judging by eye, until a medium sized puddle forms, set aside for a moment Place chocolate to be melted in a microwave safe bowl, microwave following melting directions.
(Here I used 4 large bars of Ghirardelli brand White baking chocolate but any type of chocolate that will melt can be used)
While chocolate is melting, put on decorators/food safe gloves and begin mixing the crumb liquid mixture.
I use gloved hands because it’s easier to get the feel of the mixture for consistency reasons rather then using a fork or spoon but you can use a fork or spoon if you’d prefer.
Mix and mash and smoosh until a soft mushy dough forms.
Once you get the mixture to the consistency you would like it, roll a small amount into a ball using the palms of your hands, or a cookie scoop, or a melon baler, anything will work for this.
Place platter into the freezer for about 30-90 minutes
After removing platter from freezer, take one ball at a time, and roll it around in the melted chocolate with the help of a spoon.
Place dipped balls back onto the parchment paper lined tray for drying.
TIP: Store frozen – un-dipped – cake balls in an air tight container sealed with both lid and plastic wrap. Remove just before dipping to help the chocolate coating set.
Finished Cake Balls!!! Here is the finished product. Half are yellow cake, vanilla caramel liquid coffee creamer, dipped in white chocolate. The other half are chocolate cake, Amaretto liquid coffee creamer, rolled in powdered sugar. Store them in a sealed container in the freezer until just before serving, as they will sweat some.
I serve them cold, but not frozen.

Thanks a million Tuesday! I'm going to try them today if I have time. They sound "dangerous".

If you don't have time for them to freeze up, you can also put them in your oven at 350 for 10 minutes. I always do that. and it helps with the chocolate, since the chocolate is warm and putting freezing cold stuff in it makes it turn hard...
In any case, don't put one in your month before you're finished doing them! or you'll have to eat them all

I have used both the creamer and tub icing in my cake balls. Any left over cake gets made into them. I keep a bunch made up in the freezer and dip when needed. They keep forever in the freeze until needed. When I take them to church they fly off the plate. They also make nice party favors. I plan on making them for the church bazar this year. Good luck on your venture and a Happy Birthday to your DH.

Aww Jazz! It's the beautiful thought that counted here...you were well on your way. I admire the bravery in tackling a motorcycle.

Cake balls are great! You can do so many things. I don't freeze them, I just start dipping once I roll them all...freezing can sometimes make them soggier if they don't thaw before you dip - it depends on how much liquid you added. (this tends to be a complaint by some when they first try - they don't like the texture) You can add cocoa powder, toffee bits, choco chips, etc. I usually use a liquor as the "binder" instead of creamer. You can also use leftover fillings or icing - the possibilities are endless! Good luck and Happy Birthday to Mr.Jazz! I hope he enjoys it all.
