Default Tip for Carving Cakes

Hey everyone, my boyfriend reminded me last night that I hadn't given you the best cake making tip in my arsenal yet.

If you need to carve or level a cake, instead of using a knife, go to your local hardware store and, for a few dollars, purchase a hack-saw blade. They are long (most about 12") and very thin which makes them great for leveling. Also, they hold their perfect straightness when needed, but can also be coaxed into perfect curves for domes. Also, the best part is, once you use them for a curve, they bounce right back to perfect straightness.

They do have very fine teeth, which make for the preciseness, but you must make sure to work slowly back and forth in a sawing motion when using to avoid tearing.

Hope this lends a hand to someone!!

I know what you mean, it's always the human intervention that makes these things difficult!

Alton Brown has done that on Good Eats. He also used wooden stakes to get the 2" and 1" heights for the blade to go along.

Now that's a great addition to what I am using. That would almost gaurantee level!

My bf was actually the one who thought of this. I was fighting with a cake and knife (the easter cake actaully) and he says "HOLD ON!" runs down to the garage and brings up the hack-saw blade (which I, of course, had to scrub for almost an hour...). It worked wonders!

I have that on dvd!!!!!
YEAH!!! Now I 'll have to got watch it!
I found someone on ebay who sells his dvds in multiples and the more you buy the lower each is, and 1 price for shipping as long as it fits into a priority mail box, those have several sizes so you can fit a lot of those little dvd cases. And they are the real deal, not copies or bootlegs.
I have several of his on baking and chocolates and desserts...need to watch some more again.

Do you remember who you purchased the DVD's from on EBAY? I would be interested in buying some of Alton's. Thanks
