You should also always look for "https://" rather than just "http://" before entering your credit card info, and the little padlock, so that you are sure to be entering your private information on a secure site.
I'm not sure that shopping earlier is "safer" per se, but you might find a better selection if you're shopping at a place like macys doing a one-day sale or something.
If you want to find a better deal or a coupon code for what you're looking for, go to
www.retailmenot.com and type in the name of the site you're shopping; if there are any deals to be had, they will be posted here.
The only thing I compleletely disagree with is the word ALWAYS in the sentence saying that it is always safe to shop with a credit card----I'm sure that people who have had their identity or credit card number stolen would COMPLETELY disagree.
I have no problem shopping with lesser known companies, so long as they check out, and are not shady looking. Sites that have crappy websites that look like they were put together by a 15 year old probably were LOL. If you put the companies name into google with the word "scam" behind it and pages of complaints come up, don't shop there ....Besides that, it's usually the more well-known companies that get hacked and people have their credit card info stolen from where they've stored it!
