His birthday is on the 12th. He can't eat chocolate. I can only do round shapes.
for flavor am thinking just a yellow cake, with some kind of curd filling. suggestions?
for frosting, i *might* try fondant. my mama wants me to make cookies to give out at his office and i might use fondant for that too. just a simple cookie recipe.
please tell me what color combos would look good. he's 55 i think. am a bad daughter i know. LOL
please help me guys! thanks!!!!

What are his hobbies, interests?
lemon or guava filling go good in summer with a butter yellow cake or a white cake too.

hobbies? he likes to watch boxing, basketball, generally sports. he's a manager for a medical group, he used to be a banker. he's just a quiet guy.
guava, i'm not really a fan of unfortunately. :( lemon is great though.
the color combination is what i'm struggling with the most. like maybe different shades of green?

that's a ncie combo! i actually was thinking maybe lime green, blue and brown.
i saw this picture on CC where she made fondant tiles of different colors and kinda "glued" it to the side of the cake. it had a really cool effect.

I have a brother that can't eat chocolate because of Gerd's. I did a white cake with root beer filling using the Lorann's flavoring and he loved it.

Re: Cake for my Papa's Birthday? Ideas?
I made some "root beer float" cupcakes and took them to school one day... everyone loved them. Just used white cake and a buttercream with the root beer flavoring. Put a tiny drop of brown gel paste in to give it a brown color.... got rave reviews. Of course, our staff at school sees me coming with a box and they almost attack me. They love food!!!!

Re: Cake for my Papa's Birthday? Ideas?
I'm not really a big fan of rootbeer, it's not a popular flavor here. although i do love a coke float.
so i think i've decided on this recipe
(Taken from smittenkitchen.com)
Vanilla Buttermilk Cake
Sky High: Irresistible Triple-Layer Cakes
This might be one of the best yellow cakes to come out of my kitchen, and I will certainly be coming back to it to try it in cupcake format soon. My notes are the same as for the chocolate cake above: you cannot scrape the bowl down enough. Otherwise, the cake is really quite simple, a relief when you’ve got, oh, 6 layers of it to bake.
Makes one three-layer 9-inch round cake [Equivalent in batter to an 8-inch square; we scaled it up for a 10-inch square/middle tier of the wedding cake]
3 3/4 cups cake flour
2 1/2 cups sugar
1 tablespoon plus 2 3/4 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 1/2 sticks (10 ounces) unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 1/4 cups plus 1/3 cup buttermilk
5 whole eggs
2 egg yolks
2 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1. Preheat the oven to 325°F. Butter three 9-inch round cake pans. Line the bottom of each pan with a round of parchment or waxed paper and butter the paper.
2. Combine the cake flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large mixer bowl. With the mixer on low speed, blend for 30 seconds. Add the butter and 1 1/4 cup of the buttermilk. Mix on low speed briefly to blend; then raise the speed to medium and beat until light and fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes.
3. In a smaller bowl, whisk together the whole eggs, egg yolks, vanilla, and the remaining 1/3 cup buttermilk until well blended. Pour one-third of the egg mixture into the cake batter at a time, folding it in completely after each addition. There will be 9 cups of batter; our 3 cups batter into each pan.
4. Bake for 26 to 28 minutes, or until a cake tester or wooden toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
5. Turn the layers out onto wire racks by placing a rack on top of a pan, inverting it, and lifting off the pan. Peel off the paper liners and let cool completely. When the layers have cooled, place a cardboard cake board on top of a layer, invert again, and lift off the rack. To make th elayers easier to handle, wrap them on their boards completely in plastic, so they don’t dry out, and refrigerate them.
for the frosting i'm gonna try SMBC with brown sugar instead of white. as for the filling, maybe just the SMBC and maybe toasted coconut? am still fuzzy on that one. i don't know what flavors would go well. I initially wanted lemon and coconut but i don't know if the brown sugar in the SMBC will make it taste like caramel-ish?
and also since i'm doing the fondant tiles, will it stick fine on the smbc?
hope someone could answer my questions. TIA!

Re: Cake for my Papa's Birthday? Ideas?
I would think the fondant tiles as long as they are small and light would stick but smbc doent have the strength to hold up heavy deco in my opinion.
The brown sugar will darken the color and the taste will be a little heavier and I would think more carmel-ish.
Let us know how it works though, also brown sugar is made with molasses, so that may do something a little differently with your liquids, as it seems like it would make it less stable if not careful.
The lemon and coconut with butter cake sounds divine a combo!
