I LOVE Carries Cakes in Utah....that business does some FANTASTIC cakes!!!
I hadnt even thought about gifts--I think we are just going to do immediate family and a couple of their closest friends, but I might see if everyone wants to chip in and do a little "honeymoon" for them!

I really cant decide which to do--I like both traditional and whimsy, but I just really dont know what SHE would like--I know she's only ever seen all-white buttercream round cakes!! I have two cakes that I'm really liking right now, and am thinking of different ways to incorporate parts of it--she told me that her favorite colors are rose pink and light yellow. I found a picture on Cakecentral by screen-name Godiva that I am loving for the draping (which I usually dont get into, but this was so pretty!) and lace, with roses. Then another from Carries Cakes that was just so gardeny!! Here they are. I'm liking aspects of both of them, so I might try some combination of these things.

With those two options, I don't think you could make a bad choice! Those are both beautiful.
Carries cakes is one of my favorites too! I love to go there for inspiration.

I love the draped one with roses! They're both beautiful, but I have a weakness for draped fondant.

Two lovely cakes. I can see light yellow and pink flowers done with the gardeny one. That would be very pretty.

I just love this cake from Martha Stewart's new Wedding Cake book. It's my favorite cake in the whole book!

From:

This opulent five-tier cake is a graphic interpretation of damask; it plays up the pattern, which is traditionally tone-on-tone. The intricate scrollwork is best suited to a square cake because the flat surfaces display the repeating motif to greatest advantage. To create this magnificent design, the pattern is placed under waxed paper, then piped over and filled in with royal icing. After it dries, the hardened frosting is removed from the waxed paper and affixed to the cake. The Wedgwood-blue fondant and dark-brown decorations look elegant with a chocolate cake.

They're all my favorite! Even though I do a lot of crazy designs, I tend to lean to the elegant traditional designs myself. I just do what ever the bride wants so whatever cake I am working on at the moment becomes my favorite!

I wish my grandma knew what she wanted--she gets so giggly and says "I dont know, I don't guess I've ever really seen but a couple wedding cakes! I reckon just a plain old wedding cake would be fine!" She's SO CUTE right now, she's SO excited about her "wedding"!! I really like that damask one!! Gorgeous. I bet it looks more complicated than it actually is!

I am sure you could purchase cutters and get a very similar look.. and much easier too! Grandma's tend to want the more traditional cake. I was working with a bride, mom & grandma together and I finally called the bride and met with her alone because everyone wanted a say and it was her cake!

You might try sitting down with her and showing her some of the pix on the internet, Carries is a great place because there are traditional mixed with more modern. Cakes by Sam also has a great mixture of cakes. Good Luck. I am sure she will be thrilled because you are making it for her!
