Default Need some tips..

I need to make a bowl of potato chips cake for my mil. I thought it would be easiest to just bake the bowl shaped cake in a bowl...less mess and carving.
Has anyone ever baked in a bowl? How do I do it?

I've done it before. Just make sure the bowl is oven proof. I usually use a glass Pyrex bowl. It also wouldn't hurt to use a flower nail in the middle.

Have you figured out how you're going to make the potato chips?

I baked a cake once ina stainless steel bowl. It was before I bought the Wilton wonder mold. I made a barbie doll for my dd, and wanted a big dress

How do you plan to make the potato chips? with fondant? gumpaste? or something else?

Don't forget to post the result when you're finished

Yep, I've done it. For the rear-end of a turkey cake for Thanksgiving. Worked perfectly! As far as how to do it, I just put it in the bowl, and cooked it for the time it gave for 2 rounds... but I kinda remember having to put it back in til it was done.

On a complete tangent: For those I've just thoroughly confused, it was a turkey standing up, and I created a neck/head out the front, wings on the sides and colored sugar covered graham crackers for the tail feathers. This is the kind of turkey I made.

Thanks for all the advice guys!
Do you bury the flower nail? It wouldn't be long enough to poke all the way through....? Do you lower the oven temp? Do you torte it and add support in the middle?
For the chips (I want them to look random and un-uniform like Lay's...not all the same like pringles) I'm going to use SI ivory and gumpaste for the base color, cut them with an oval cutter and re-shape some of the edges so that they're random in shape but similar in size. I'm going to dry some in the Wilton lg flower former, and dry some in weird contortions. Then I'm going to get one of those nifty preval sprayers and spray them with a very light base coat of yellow and just a spritz of brown. Maybe a little granulated sugar on top for salt? Salt is her weakness....
Ya think it'll work? I dunno, I guess we'll find out! I think we're going there on the weekend of the 28th. I'll be sure to post pix when I'm done.

That sounds right about making the chips. Maybe take a small part of a Handy Wipe or paper towel & dab some brown color & rub it on the edges of the chips? And don't forget to fold some over some straws or cooking spoons. The folded ones are my favorite ones!

This sounds like it is going to be a great cake! I have never baked in a bowl myself, but I know others that have and had great results. Please post pics!

I will. I'm really excited about this one. This is the first just for fun cake I've done in a while. I decided to make it a smidge bigger. I'm going to do a square cake base (best ever chocolate cake, and toffee cream filling from the recipe section...thanks guys!) and line it with her two favorite candy bars, Skor and Snickers (hence the chocolate/toffee cake). Then place a small bowl of chips (Whimsical Bakehouse Orange Butter Cake....mmmmmm) on top of that. I'm going to call it my "dieters dream" cake because she is forever dieting. I hope it turns out as cute as it is in my head!!
