Question Cake stand

Hello everyone
Lately, I've been wanting to buy a silver round/or square or both cake stands. Checked a local store and the one they had was over $120. I'm not ready to pay money like that for a nice stand. Except for ebay, does anyone know a store or place where I can get a nice silver looking cake stand. I didn't see any on INTO. Also checked craigslist.com but my local "for sale" doesn't have anything.

just a cake stand, why not get a nice big plate, a size bigger than the cake size you regularly bake. and just buy a sundae glass or candy bowl, glue the bottom of the bowl or glass to the bottom of the plate and there you go.

i used wine glasses and plates too. you can check out the cake i made for my grandma it's in my pictures.

Somehow my wedding cakes are always toooo heavy. Well, one reason is that I do EVERYTHING from scratch, no box cake mixes or semi products. That's why the idea of wine glasses or martini glasses under the big plate won't work for me. I need something sturdy and pretty and reusable (not so fragile).
thanks for the idea though.

I've never ordered from them, but Ironbaker may have. I think Amanda was going to order one of the stands, so maybe you can check with her too. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Interesting! Have you actually compared the weight of an 8" x 4" iced boxed cake (or doctored boxed cake) to an 8" x 4" scratch cake?

I've been baking both ways for a decade and have never noted any difference. I would imagine you might be surprised if you tried picking up a 5 tier cake made from mixes. Cake is heavy, no matter if your flour and sugar came from a box or from your canisters. Just ask my poor broken back! LOL

Maybe you're right, The recipe I have (ukrainian one from my mom, and i've used it for the last 10 years) seems to require a lot of ingridients. For example, my sponge (white) cakes need a dozen eggs for just one layer for 16" pan. For a 8" - half a dozen. I don't think that boxed cake mixes require that much. I may be wrong about the weight.
