Exclamation Small batch royal icing & royal icing cages

I would like to make some royal icing, but I don't need a whole lot. Maybe 1 or 2 cups of it. Does anyone have a scaled down recipe for royal icing? I have powdered egg whites that I would use for it.

Also, I remember seeing a website where you have to pay a membership in order to get access to video clips of cake decorating. But they had a free video showing how they made royal icing heart cages, where the lady piped royal icing onto the back side of a heart shape mini pans and once they set up, they formed cages. Does anyone know of the link to this?

Can't help with the Royal Icing, but the website is yummyarts.com and they have a bunch of vids on youtube if you go there and search on cakesmadeeasy.

I made this last night. I needed just a little bit to decorate a few cookies. It also keeps quiet well for a few days in a glass jar with a tight lid. Just rebeat, I use a fork. I also use powdered egg whites.

2 c. powdered sugar
1 tsp. powdered egg whites
3 tbsps warm water
1 tsp clear vanilla extract

Mix powdered sugar and egg whites in mixing bowl. Mix with paddle attachment
on low. Slowly drizzle in water and extract. Scrape down bowl and turn mixer back on to med/hi. Beat for about 5 minutes. It makes probably about 1 cup of icing.

I got this out of the book "Cookie Craft". It has some great information. I also have a recipe for a small batch of royal icing for flooding if you are interested.

Hope this is what you are lookin for.

Originally I thought of doing the royal icing cages as a mesh pocket for a 3D golf bag cake. But now I'm thinking of just doing lines out of fondant. What do you think would work better and stay on the side of the cake the best?

Fondant would probably be sturdier...but royal cages (like black netting? That's what I'm picturing) would look awesome!!! You could always glue them on once you get to the venue.
