Default Coffee flavor in a Cake ideas??

I'm planning to make my husband a cake... nothing fancy, just cake and icing, for his birthday next month. He LOVES the flavor of coffee, so I was hoping that someone would have an idea of how to put this into a cake. I was thinking maybe some kind of coffee flavored frosting??? Maybe? Doesnt have to be coffee flavored frosting though, I'd be fine with coffee flavored cake--Im totally lost here. LOL. I dont have the slightest idea of any recipes--mostly because Im not exactly sure what Im looking for. That's where you fabulous people come in!! Any suggestions?

I've made the stout cake and added coffee flavoring. I love the taste of coffee as well. I don't see why you can't add the flavoring to any cake batter. Good luck.

Coffee flavor goes well with chocolate. Make your regular chocolate cake recipe, but add some strong coffee in it (or replace some of the water/or milk for it) and in the icing add some home made coffee syrup (with instant coffee, add just enough water for it to dissolve and it syruppy) and there, you get an amazing coffee flavored chocolate cake, reall yummy, and hard to resist so be careful for your hips

Those both sound good. I love chocolate, and that's a good idea to pour some coffee in the batter. .....What is the stout cake?! My VERY favorite beer in the whole world is a Sam Adams Cream Stout---I'm intrigued!

You could also use a mocha filling. It' just a chocolate filling with coffee instead of chocolate. If you're interested I'll see if I can find my recipe.

No problem at all. This is actually a recipe for pastry cream filling (kinda like a custard) but it can be modified to make it chocolate or mocha. My Wilton instructor gave this to me. It's very easy, and I use it all the time.

3 Tbls. flour
6 Tbls. sugar
1/8 tsp. salt
1 cup half and half
4 egg yolks
1 tsp. vanilla extract

Mix the flour salt and sugar in a saucepan and blend in a little of the cream over medium heat and stir constantly.
Add the rest of the cream and continue stirring until it reaches the consistency of a medium cream sauce.
Mix a little of the sauce into the egg yolks, then add the eggs to the saucepan.
Mix for a few minutes on low hear until thickened.
Remove from heat and add vanilla.
To prevent a skin from forming, brush with melted butter. Stir before using.

For Mocha: reduce the amount of cream by 2 Tbls. and substitute 2 Tbls. of extra strong fresh coffee.
For Chocolate : Use recipe as is and after removing from heat add 2 ounces of melted unsweetened chocolate. (*I use semisweet....it tastes like brownie batter)

There ya go. I hope you like it!

I use this for my chocolate cake recipe but I use the dark cocoa instead.
Recipes : Beatty's Chocolate Cake : Food Network
Also, I use a SMBC or a IMBC would also work with the dissolved instant coffee in it. I usually add a bit more than it calls for, since I really like the coffee flavor in the chocolate buttercream. I also use 1/2 bittersweet chocolate and 1/2 semi-sweet chocolate in my frosting. HTH

I like to make Colette Peter's Chocolate Bourbon cake which has strong coffee as the main liquid, and substitute Kahlua for the bourbon. I'll make IMBC and flavor it with the instant espresso. The coffee-holics at work love this one right behind the Chocolate Stout cake (the recipe for the stout cake is in the Cake Recipes section here in the forum).

Yummy!
