Drum Set Cake Help, ASAP
I posted the other day about the pastor wanting a graduation cake for his son. Well I guess now they are thinking about maybe a cake that looks like a drum set and it would need to serve 100 people. Any ideas or suggestions on how to do this and how much to charge for it? I would need to give a rough idea by 7PM tonight, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Drum Set Cake Help, ASAP
All in all a drum set would be pretty simple to make in cake form. All of your cakes, with the exception of the bass drum, could be stacked rounds. Cymbals can be straight gumpaste or fondant. I think the hardest part would be designing a stand to put all the cakes on.
Snare drum, 8 "round (just one layer)
Floor Tom, 12" rounds (at least 3 layers)
Stand Toms 10" rounds (2 layers)
Bass drum...Your guess is as good as mine!
Of course you can scale down all the sizes, as that would feed a lot of people. You'd just have a smaller set. As far as charging...I guess it depends on what size cakes you go with and how much time you put into it. I would guess no less than $200....but it's your call.
Hope that helps some!
Good luck! I can't wait to see pix!!

Edited to add a picture of a set. I just found a simple cheapy set just in case you needed a reference. See how complex the cake stand would have to be? It'd look really cool if you could do it though!

WOW! You certainly know your drums. I don't even know the differences between all of those different parts (floor tom, stand tom, bass drum, snare drum).
I think if I was able to get the structure for it, then it probably wouldn't be that hard to set the cakes onto. But I think they are wanting this cake by next Saturday so I don't know if I'll have the time to do it that elaborately. Perhaps I might just have it laying down so it would be from a bird's eye perspective if that makes more sense.

Re: Drum Set Cake Help, ASAP
I used to be a high school band director.
If you could find some pipe at the hardware store and a board to bolt it to you could probably make a pretty simple version of it. Just vertical pipes (at different heights) with a cake on top of it for everything but the bass drum. It'd just be a matter of finding the right materials....and whether or not you want to go that far with it. .gif)
You could also do a chocolate or bc transfer on a cake
OH!! I just had an idea!! How about all the drums and the stand (in pieces) lying on the floor like he's getting ready to put it together?
Or...a stack of drums in their boxes...like for travel. I'll see if I can find a picture of that for you.
Just some more thoughts. This is making me want to make a drum cake!

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I have definitely thought of those other ideas just in case he doesn't want the other thing. I don't think it would be too hard to do a whole drum set, but I guess the part I'm worried about would be doing all of the supports and getting the supplies for those. Hopefully something will work out.

Re: Drum Set Cake Help, ASAP
There are several pics of drums cakes over on CC - they have a Music/Musical Instruments section in the cakes gallery. I patterned my nephew's drum cake (see my album here) after the photo submitted by SugarPlum Studio. It was insanely easy to do - the hardest part was making the hardware for the sides, and that was just making long rectangles out of gumpaste, sticking spaghetti through them, and balling up more gumpaste for the ends, letting it dry overnight, then 'painting' with NuSilver luster dust. The silver ribbon around the top and bottom was ribbon I bought at Michael's, then took off before cutting the cake. It was the only non-edible part.
Have fun with the cake!

Re: Drum Set Cake Help, ASAP
Thanks. However, they ended up deciding to go with 2 sheet cakes instead.

sighs, doesn't that just sometimes get ya in crawl? You get all siked up to try something different and finds ideas and such and then BOOM They revert to sheet cakes.
