Default gumpaste question

I bought a container of gumpaste--I was thinking of using it to make the spikes for the stegosaurus. Does it take very long to dry, and is it hard to use??

not hard to use but takes usually a good day to dry thoroughly though.

Okay, so I will go ahead and start on it then!! Thanks! The PLAN is to do a red stegosaurus with yellow spikes. Hope it works out--if not, I at least still have time to run to the grocery store and order something from the bakery.

Adding a little tylose powder will make it much quicker and harder. I hardly every use gumpaste without adding some! I can make loops for my bows and put the bow together all in the same day if I add tylose.

I've also heard too that you can take fondant and mix it with some gumpaste in order to make it harden faster then just using fondant by itself. Good luck.

Wow... well, I must say that I am a HUGE fan of red satin ice!! I have never been able to cover a cake so quickly. In the time since my last post, I got my cake carved, crumbcoated, and iced. And it took me all of 15 minutes to get it covered in fondant! I was working with the gumpaste but decided I really dont like it--it was too finickey. So I made some white marshmallow fondant and tinted it yellow-orange. And then cut out the "spikes" and the "spots"... I forgot I dont have any rice krispie treats to do the legs, tail and head yet, so I'm going to get those when I go out in a bit and get this cake finished!!! I have NEVER done a cake so fast before. ...Course the treasure chest cake only took me 2 hours. It usually takes me many, many hours--the unicorn took me 5 for example. I'm SO excited. And really glad I started it early bc I dont have to be up working on it all night.

And I have to throw in a kudos to my husband---I told him that I was about to start trying to work with the Satin Ice (and he remembers the ruined batch I got last summer)... He said "Let me go bump the air down some more so it'll be super cold in here--maybe that will help you." I was praying the whole time I was getting it out that it'd work well, and when it just rolled out so perfectly I said "Wow, God, really?! Thanks!" HAHA
