I usually wrap the pan with the plastic wrap unless I don't have another size of the same pan I will remove from the pan and then wrap the cake by itself with the plastic wrap. When I go to remove the plastic wrap I let the cake air for a little bit before icing.
Have you ever had a problem with the cake being stuck in the pan by leaving it in the pan? I think I would be too worried that I wouldn't be able to get the cake out after it has completely cooled.
Thanks for the tip! I thought leaving it in the pan and wrapping it in cling film will leave the cake wet. Interesting that it does not. Will try it soon.

No I haven't had a problem with the cake sticking to the sides. I give the cake a shake when I take it out of the oven to make sure the sides are not stuck. Then I let it cool about 5 to 10 minutes then wrap them.
