Default Anyone ever mail a cake?

A friend of mine was joking about sending her a cake - from NJ to Ft. Lauderdale area. I had forgotten about and had thought about doing it in the winter when it was colder. Any ideas? I don't want to spend a fortune packing it in ice. It would probably be cheaper to take it via Jet Blue. I figure a fondant covered cake might make it. Anyone know what happens in shipping? I was thinking of doing a dummy for her.

I think it would be very difficult to send a cake safely. I would be too worried of the cake getting crushed or smashed.

Thanks for the threads. I think if I made a fondant covered one, I could wrap it and put it in a box not much bigger than the cake & it would arrive in one piece. My worry with FL is if it's sitting in a hot warehouse even for a few hours. I asked her to send me pics of her kitchen & dining room & maybe I'll make a cake dummy for her to fit her decor. I had old fondant once & covered it in brown colored fondant to make it look chocolate. I never got time to finish it but it's sitting on a covered cake plate in my back room waiting for decoration. When people see it, they say "mmm, who's that for?" My 9 yr old nephew was SOOOO disappointed.

you could do a fondant cake in a box just it's size wrapped in clear wrap, then wrap that box in dry ice and clear wrap again in a box just the size it needs to be, then wrap in brown wrapping paper they use for packages then mail over night. It should arrive fine, but I wouldn't trust delicate stuff to travel.

I can only imagine how much it would cost to ship a cake, after you consider sending it overnight mail and using dry ice and so forth. You might be better off to have someone pay you to either drive the cake to the location (like what Duff does), or fly down there and decorate it on site.
