Hahaha ~~ you know, when I finished her, I thought she looked a little chunky...and the graduate is a little bit chunky...I sure hope she didn't think I actually tried to model her to scale!!!!! Seriously, I was just winging it, so her body is in all these random Frankenstein parts. It's a wonder she actually ended up looking human.

Jaclyn, nope, you don't need to add shortening or anything. This extruder has a screw-down plunger, so it will extrude fondant, fondant with Tylose, fondant with Gum-Tex, and straight gumpaste with no problems at all. You just turn the little handle at the top and the extruder does all the work. I LOVE it.

It comes with 3 sizes of rectangles, too, so it makes super fast work of twisted garland swags, streamers, narrow bow loops...plus, it's aluminum, so I just throw mine in the dishwasher when it needs a bath.

Hobby Lobby has a 40% off coupon on their website this week - go getcha one!

Do you have any tips to give? I have to make a graduation cake for my son's senior class for a thing they call project graduation (it is for all the seniors that graduate that is all night party at the school) I would like to be able to fix a male and female figure (if possible) on the cake.

Thanks for the kind words.

The only tip I have to offer is to buy/borrow/check out a book on this subject, whether it's for cakes or Sculpey clay books. She was really difficult to do, and when I watched Maisie Parrish do an entire cake of cute little babies in a bathtub, it looked so easy. Unfortunately, I did not take notes or buy her book then because I didn't foresee myself wanting to make any figures. Dumb, dumb, dumb!

Today I talked to the graduate and asked her what she did with the fondant figure, and she said SHE ATE PARTS OF HER!!!!!!!

OMG - I nearly died of shock! I used pure gumpaste for the head, arms, legs, and torso, and used black Wilton fondant with Tylose for the robe and hair. I asked her which part she ate, and she said THE ROBE!!! I asked her if it tasted bad, because black fondant (I left out the Wilton part - haha) is typically very bitter, but she said that it tasted like sweet icing.

How freakin' weird is that?? Hilarious!!!

I made her hair and her tassel with a Makins Ultimate Clay Extruder. It comes with 20 discs and is one of my all-time fav tools for working with F/GP. They have them at Michaels and Hobby Lobby and a bunch of places online. Here's the link: Amazon.com: Makins Professional Ultimate Clay Extruder: Office Products

She came out great! Her face came out sooo nice. How did you paint it? What kind of icing is on your cake? I love my Makins! I even use it for bottom borders.

Great job!!
