Hi all,
I'm very new to baking but I am having a blast. I have taken the Wilton courses and although I am not the greatest decorator I'm not the worst. I have looked at some of the cakes on this site and they are incredible. I'm sure I will get a lot of great information here and I really will appreciate any tips. I am doing a cake for my last class and I have covered a round cake with fondant ( not to badly ) but now I want to do a square one and need all the help I can get. I will be grateful for any help I can get.
Thanks,
Barbbaby

Welcome to the boards!! We have a great group of people here, and I'm sure that you'll learn lots--and enjoy goofing off with us all too!

As far as covering a square cake with fondant, I don't have any tips on technique--I guess I just picked it up and put it on there until I made it look right?? I know there will be someone more helpful than this! Here's a picture of the only square one I've ever covered in fondant....

Welcome!

I actually prefer covering square cakes vs round, I think they're easier! Here's a link to a video that shows you how to do them.

HI newbie! and Welcome! We all have issues with fondant in one way or another. Try these videos as well from a member who is well versed in fondant and techniques. We all will pitch in of course and help any way we can but her videos are great for many things, I use them step by step while doing something and boy has it helped me.

Welcome to the group! The secret is practice, practice, practice and that doesn't necessarily help altogether. I'm always shocked when watching the cake challenge shows & theirs is tearing. Remember what my Wilton instructor said "decorations cover mistakes". Unless you're trying to do simple wedding cakes right away, you'll be fine! I was just about the worst one in my class but just loved it & had admiring family & co-workers who would take my practice cakes.

Watch the stuff that you buy so you don't wind up with stuff you don't need. Someone here asked about 2" vs. 3" pans. I fill the 3" about 1/4-1/2 in. from the top to make a bigger cake, not have to bake 2 of them & have less cake tops. I don't want to be bothered making 2 - 2" cakes. Someone said they bought the 3" pans because it gives the option of 2 vs 3". Makes sense! I know your wide eyed in this new world. Check out CakeCentral.com for some amazing cakes. They make me try to do things I'm not capable of doing! I know you're having fun!!!
