I have always used the recipe on the box of German's Sweet Chocolate. There is also a recipe for the Coconut Pecan Icing. It always works wonderful for me. HTH

I use a german chocolate cake mix with this filling

Ingredients

1 cup evaporated milk
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup shredded coconut
1 cup chopped pecans
Directions

Combine evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks, and butter or margarine in a saucepan. Heat over medium heat about 12 minutes. Remove from heat. Add coconut and pecans. Cool.

Hope this helps you

Coconut Pecan icing is usually the staple for a German Chocolate cake. As far as a filling goes, perhaps a Bavarian cream. That might compliment the cake nicely.

I baked my cake tonight...used the 5 star recipe from CC - but I compared the recipe to the one on the German's Sweet Chocolate...and basically someone copied THAT recipe, added slightly more flour, and called the recipe their own! The cake came out NICE - very fluffy and moist! This is for hubby B-day on Saturday....and he's impressed so far!
