Default Love the Hi Ratio Shortening!

I got my shortening and finally had a chance to try it out...I love it! The icing is so much smooth and has a much better mouth feel. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get as much as I was hoping for, so I'll be out before long and it took quite a bit of time to get it in.

Did you get it from here? I just checked the store and they don't have any. I'd love to try it. I just tried the Sugar Shack buttercream technique about a week ago and was amazed at the difference. I'd love to try the hi-ratio and see what that does, too.

No, I was planning on it, but I wanted to try it really, really bad and my local grocer managed to get me some. I've been watching here, but so far it's not been listed. Seems like they said they got it in a week or so ago, but it's not in the store.

I used Sugarshack's recipe too. It's a wonderful method for icing, works like a charm.

I do believe it was said they were going to list it in their store soon...it should be in 50lb.blocks from what I understand.

Yes, I found the post about it. They had said they were hopefully going to get it listed weekend before last. I guess the server issues have really gotten them backed up. A 50lb block is fine with me! I hate having to constantly replenish supplies.

I really hope they get it listed soon, it was pain having to get it ordered locally.

It would take me forever to go through a 50 lb. block! How long does it last? Or, can you freeze icing once you make it?

You can freeze the icing with no problems.

I'm pretty sure you can freeze the shortening as well. I know I keep lard in the freezer and it doesn't hurt it at all. Before you ask, I keep lard on hand because I have a very old orange cookie recipe that is to die for but you have to use lard or it's just not the same!

hhhhm, I have a recipe that requires it too and I use my high ratio shortening with it and it does well. Ya think it's a taste issue your used to from the lard?

I divide my shortening into 5 pound blocks and freeze them in individual containers in my freezer in basement to use when I need them. Also I freeze my icing in sure seal saran wrap and then into a freezer bag by ziplock and it last months. I have actually never had any go bad or taste funny. Just thaw and re-whip for a minute to smooth and get consistency back.

I've had this recipe for over 30 years and nothing works like lard does. They're not even worth making if you don't use it.

My mother got it from the mom of a friend of mine when I was in high school. The girl had brought them to school and I loved them! I demanded my mother call her mother and get that recipe!

My mom, who never used lard made them with regular shortening. They were yucky! The taste was the same, but what makes these cookies beyond delicious is the texture. Lard gives baked goods a wonderful crispy crust that rather than be hard, is just melt in your mouth delicious. It doesn't matter what shortening you use, you're not going to get the same unique crispiness that you get with lard.

Once she made them using lard, they were just as good as the ones I had eaten the first time. So no, it's not that I'm used to the taste that lard gives. In fact, I can't even tell the difference taste wise between lard and veg. shortening.
