Default Shortening Question

Since I do not have any hi-ratio and am unable to aquire any, I will be making a buttercream with just regular shortening. Am I able to use butter flavor shortening or do I need the regular flavor?
Thanks so much!

I don't know why you couldn't. Do you use any flavoring in your bc already? I think it depends on what you want it to taste like. I've never used butter flavored shortening, but I did use plain crisco (and butter flavoring) for ages!
Do you have a chance to make a test run to see if you like the taste? I think that's what I'd do...if you have the time.
Good luck!! I'd love to hear how it turns out if you use the butter flavored shortening.

I would definitely use regular shortening. IMO the butter flavor has more of an artificial flavor to it.

I have a couple recipes with shortening with butter flavoring and they are ok, but I too taste the flavoring as artificial tasting but others love it. So it's a taste issue with your personal tastes.

I don't like the butter flavor shortening too much, either. If I want to increase the butter flavor, I use the Wilton butter flavor in the bottle. I've also added imitation butter & nut extract and it's great.

I also vote on not using the butter flavored shortening. If you want a buttery taste, then I would use a butter flavoring (like the wilton), or the butter and nut extract.

I've never used the butter flavored shortening because it was more expensive...does it taste that bad? I just assumed imitation butter flavor is imitation butter flavor....not so?
Sorry if I gave you bad advice Cadysmom!!

It's the same to me Amanda. Whether it's put in the shortening to flavor it or added to the icing itself, the artificial flavoring tastes the same to me. Personally, I can't stand the taste and especially can't stand the smell of artificial butter flavoring.

If it were me, I'd use real butter or stick with regular shortening.

You might be better off to use the regular shortening and then add in butter extract.
