What we do is fill plastic shoe boxes for the Good Samaritan. They are filled with hygiene items, 1 small toy and hard candies. This goes on through October and all the church in Des Moines bring their boxes to one location and then they are mailed. Last year it cost $7.00 to mail each box, so we take up donations for that expense.
I buy Christmas paper when it goes on sale and stock pile it. I was lucky enough to get it for .25 a roll at Walgreens.
